1. Before the book begins Exposition

In an earlier book, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, two boys found robbers' gold in a cave. Huckleberry Finn's share was six thousand dollars. Judge Thatcher put it out at interest, and the Widow Douglas took Huck in as her son.

Huck is thirteen, the son of the town drunk, and belongs to the class the South called white trash — poorer than the working class. His friend Tom is middle class. That difference matters to the last page.

The Widow and her sister Miss Watson try to “sivilize” him: prayers, clean clothes, regular hours. They are religious — and they own slaves. That contradiction is the novel's engine.

2. Pap comes back The inciting incident • Ch. 4-6

A drowned body is found and the town says it is Pap. Huck knows better: a drowned man floats on his face, not on his back. So Pap is alive — and one night Huck goes up to his room and finds him sitting there.

Pap has come back for one reason: the money. He hates that his son can read. He takes Huck across the river, locks him in a cabin, and beats him. Between the beatings he makes speeches against a government that lets a black professor from Ohio vote.

Pap's three motives, in the lecture's own words: greed, jealousy, alcoholism. Twain uses him to attack slavery from the inside — a man who owns nothing insisting that he owns his son.

3. The faked death, and the meeting Ch. 7-9 • the story really begins

Huck saws a hole in the cabin wall, kills a pig, spreads its blood, and drags the body to the river so the town will think he was murdered. Then he paddles to Jackson's Island.

There he finds a camp fire — and Jim, Miss Watson's slave, who drops to his knees, certain he is looking at Huck's ghost. Jim has run away because he overheard Miss Watson planning to sell him down to New Orleans for eight hundred dollars, though she had promised she never would.

They find a house floating down the river with a dead man inside, shot in the back. Jim looks at the face, covers it, and will not let Huck see. He says nothing more about it for the rest of the book.

Two runaways, two kinds of unfreedom, one river. The dead man is Pap — and Jim protects Huck from knowing it for four hundred pages.

4. Down the river Ch. 10-16 • rising action, and the first moral test

Huck dresses as a girl, calls himself Sarah Williams, and goes into town for news. He learns there is a $300 reward for Jim and $200 for Pap. They flee.

On the raft they are free. Twice Huck hurts Jim. First he leaves a dead rattlesnake on his blanket and its mate bites him. Then, after a fog separates them, he tells Jim the whole night was a dream — until Jim sees the leaves and the broken oar and answers quietly: “Trash is what people is dat puts dirt on de head er dey fren's.”

It takes Huck fifteen minutes to make himself go and humble himself to a black man. He does it, and never regrets it.

Then they near Cairo, the free-state town. Jim is “all over trembly and feverish to be so close to freedom.” Huck's conscience turns on him: he was most free — and who was to blame for it? Why, me. He paddles off to turn Jim in — and Jim calls after him that he is “de on'y white genlman dat ever kep' his promise to ole Jim.”

Slave-hunters stop him. Huck opens his mouth to betray Jim and cannot. “I warn't man enough — hadn't the spunk of a rabbit.” He tells them the man on his raft is white, and has smallpox. They row away fast.

This is the first version of the choice the whole novel builds toward. Huck's conclusion is the key to his character: whichever way he chooses he feels bad — so he stops obeying the rule and starts obeying the situation.

5. They miss Cairo The turning point

The fog hides Cairo and they float past it. From that moment every mile carries Jim deeper into slave country, not out of it. A steamboat then smashes the raft and separates them.

Huck comes ashore among the Grangerfords, calling himself George Jackson. They are kind, cultured, church-going — and locked in a thirty-year feud with the Shepherdsons. Huck asks Buck, a boy his own age, what the feud is about. Nobody remembers. Then Sophia Grangerford elopes with Harney Shepherdson, the men take their guns, and by evening Buck is dead in the water.

Huck drags the bodies ashore, covers their faces, cries a little, and runs for the river. “You feel mighty free and easy and comfortable on a raft.”

The lesson of the Grangerfords is the lesson of the whole land: society is polite, religious, well-dressed — and it kills its own children for a reason it has forgotten.

6. The Duke and the Dauphin Ch. 19-30 • the raft is invaded

Two men running from angry townsfolk climb aboard. One claims to be the Duke of Bridgewater; the older claims to be the lost Dauphin, son of Louis XVI. Huck sees through them within a page. Jim believes them. Huck says nothing — the one useful thing Pap taught him is that you let such men have their way.

They work their way downriver: a fake pirate confession at a camp meeting; mangled Shakespeare; the Royal Nonesuch. Huck watches a town weep for a fraud and thinks: “It was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race.”

In one town he sees Colonel Sherburn shoot a drunk named Boggs in daylight, and then face down the mob that comes to lynch him: “The average man's a coward… If any real lynching's going to be done, it will be done in the dark, Southern fashion.” The crowd runs.

At night Huck wakes to find Jim mourning for his children, and hears the story of the day he struck his little daughter Elizabeth for disobedience — and discovered afterwards that scarlet fever had left her deaf. “Oh, she was plumb deef en dumb, Huck — en I'd ben a-treat'n her so!”

Then the con men try to steal the Wilks sisters' inheritance by posing as their English uncles. Huck steals the gold back and hides it in the dead man's coffin. Furious, the “king” sells the family's slaves, splitting a mother from her sons. And at Pikesville he sells Jim to the Phelps family for forty dollars.

Huck's education is complete: greed (Pap), inherited violence (the feud), mob cowardice (Sherburn), fraud (the con men) — and beside all of it, one man weeping for a deaf child he struck twenty years ago.

7. THE CLIMAX — Chapter 31 الذروة • “All right, then, I'll go to hell”

Jim is gone, sold. Huck sits down to think, and his conscience — the voice of everything he was taught — tells him he has stolen a poor old woman's property and will burn for it.

He kneels to pray, and the words will not come. He works out why: “I was playing double. I was letting on to give up sin, but away inside of me I was holding on to the biggest one of all.” You can't pray a lie.

So he writes the letter: Miss Watson, your runaway nigger Jim is down here two mile below Pikesville… and signs it HUCK FINN. He feels clean for the first time in his life.

Then he sits holding the paper and remembers the river — Jim standing his watch so Huck could sleep, Jim calling him honey, Jim glad when he came out of the fog, Jim saying he was the best friend old Jim ever had.

“I was a-trembling, because I'd got to decide, forever, betwixt two things, and I knowed it.”

He believes the choice is between Jim and heaven. He chooses Jim.

“All right, then, I'll go to hell” — and tore it up.

The moral summit of the novel and the most examined passage in the course. Note what makes it heroic: Huck is not enlightened. He still thinks slavery is right and that he is damning himself. He does it anyway, for one person he loves.

8. The evasion Ch. 32-41 • falling action

At the Phelps farm Aunt Sally mistakes Huck for her nephew Tom Sawyer. Huck plays along. The real Tom arrives and pretends to be his brother Sid.

Huck confesses that he means to steal Jim out of slavery, and braces for disgust. Tom's eye lights up: “I'll help you steal him!”

What Huck does not know is that Tom already knows Jim is free. Miss Watson died two months ago and freed him in her will. Tom says nothing, because a simple rescue would be no adventure. Jim's door is locked with a key anyone could pick up; Tom insists on a tunnel, rope ladders and secret inscriptions, out of the prison-escape novels he has read.

The escape happens, the pursuers fire, and Tom is shot in the leg. Huck wants to run. Jim refuses to move a step without a doctor, because Tom would never have left a wounded boy behind.

“I knowed he was white inside, and I reckoned he'd say what he did say.”

Jim gives up his last chance at freedom to save the boy who has been playing games with it. The doctor tells the men afterwards that he never saw a better nurse or a faithfuller one — and prices him at a thousand dollars.

9. The ending Ch. 42 and Chapter the Last • resolution

They want to hang Jim; the doctor's testimony saves him. Then Tom rises up in bed and shouts the truth: “He ain't no slave; he's as free as any cretur that walks this earth!” Aunt Polly arrives, confirms it, and pulls Huck out from under the bed by name.

Tom pays Jim forty dollars for being a patient prisoner — the same sum the duke sold him for. Jim takes it as proof that his hairy-chest omen was true all along.

And Jim finally tells Huck the thing he has carried since Chapter 9: the dead man in the floating house was Pap. “He ain't a comin' back no mo', Huck.” The six thousand dollars is still safe.

Aunt Sally means to adopt Huck and sivilize him. He has been there before. “I reckon I got to light out for the Territory ahead of the rest.”

The ending is deliberately uncomfortable, and the exam tests that. Jim's freedom comes not from the river, not from his own courage, and not from Huck's sacrifice, but from a dead white woman's will. Lecture 10 states it plainly: “black people are only free by the generosity of white people” — and Paper B keys that statement TRUE.

10. What the novel is actually about The three sentences to write in an answer

1. A boy's conscience against his heart. Huck's conscience is not his moral sense — it is his training. Every time he obeys it he does something cruel; every time he disobeys it he does something good. Twain's point is that a conscience can be taught to approve anything.

2. Land against river. Ashore: slavery, violence, hypocrisy, greed, civilization. On the raft: freedom, innocence, peace, loyalty. Every scene is a movement between the two.

3. Realism against romanticism. Huck learns from what he sees; Tom learns from books. Twain shows that the second gets people killed — Emmeline, the Grangerfords, and very nearly Jim.
